Here are some outstanding applications of our technology, but it can just as easily be used almost anywhere in the power generation value chain. Our inspection solutions rely on eddy current arrays (ECA) and are high resolution and extremely rugged.

Typical Applications


Turbines are mission-critical assets. They are also large, complex, and costly to shut down. And yet, inspecting them is vital to ensure safety and to maximize their useful lives. Eddyfi has done extensive work on such turbine components as:

  • Dovetails
  • Blades (leading edge, gas path, root)
  • Generator slots
  • Retaining rings
  • Rotor bores
  • Boreholes

Steam Generators

The steam generators of a commercial nuclear power plant provide a barrier between the radioactive water inside the reactor and the rest of the plant, they cool the reactor, and they generate the steam that drives the turbines and produces electricity. By surface area, the steam generator is the largest component of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). Each PWR contains multiple steam generators, with each steam generator containing anywhere from less than 3000 to more than 15 000 tubes, depending on the model. Steam generator tube integrity and inspection requirements are among the most stringent in the world, requiring that these tubes be inspected regularly for a variety of conditions and damage mechanisms.

Eddyfi offers innovative bobbin probes and high-speed, high-resolution array probes for accurate and reliable inspection of steam generator tubing.

Balance of Plant

Balance of plant (BoP) is what regroups all the equipment and plants other than those in the main power plant. Eddyfi ECA probes are now commonly used in the BoP to ensure the safety and reliability of its assets.

Austenitic Stainless Steel and Inconel Welds

These types of welds are often encountered in the extreme conditions found in the power generation industry because they generally resist well to heat, cracking, and corrosion. Which makes it all the more important to inspect them for cracks and corrosion. Eddyfi has developed a series of probes to do exactly that.

Nuclear-Specific Applications

The applications and products that we’ve developed over the years are designed for PWRs, Canada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) reactors, and boiling water reactors (BWR). There are several challenges specific to nuclear applications, not the least of which is radiation.

Here are some examples of what we’ve accomplished:

Fuel rods

Enriched uranium pellets are stacked into tubes, sealed, and then used as fuel rods in nuclear power reactors. Fuel rods, arguably the most critical component of nuclear power reactors, come in a variety of diameters and Eddyfi has developed various solutions to inspect fuel rod welds and in-service fuel rods for all sorts of defects such as wall loss, pitting, and subsurface cracking.


Welds are critical in the nuclear power generation industry because they cement critical components together. Eddyfi’s expertise in weld inspection solutions extends to:

J-Butt Welds

J-butt welds are more costly to prepare, but use less filler material and are stronger than V-butt welds, which is a necessary feature in the nuclear power generation industry. Eddyfi has developed an expertise with such welds by designing inspection solutions for bottom-mounted instrumentation (BMI) and control rod drive mechanisms (CRDM), among others.

Nozzle Welds

Reactor vessels in PWRs, CANDU reactors, and BWRs feature welded nozzles for various purposes. These welds have to be rigorously inspected for defects, which can be achieved with Eddyfi solutions.

Vent-Line Welds

Welds in the venting system must also be regularly and thoroughly checked for defects to prevent leaks from the system.

Storage Tanks

Eddyfi has also developed a variety of solutions for tank floors and cap welds.

CANDU-Specific Solutions

CANDU reactors have particular requirements that have involved the development of targeted, custom solutions for pressure tube inspection, for example. This has also led Eddyfi to develop SLAR, CIGAR, and GAP probes, as well as several other solutions for these reactors.
